The 5 Minute Vacation

Imagine your favorite vacation. Perhaps you’re lying on a beach, watching the waves gently caress the shore. Now think about where your daily responsibilities and pressures. Suddenly that vacation seems a long way away.

If your daydreams have you wishing for a escape but you find yourself facing long days at the office, housework waiting to be done, and shrinking personal time, then you need to take a 5 minute vacation. The purpose is to honor yourself for a few minutes.

The other day, I found myself in need of this kind of break. I was working too much, not eating as well as I should, and I realized I wasn’t visiting the gym enough. It became very obvious to me why I was feeling grumpy and was starting to spiral into a very bitter place.

Your trip can be done in a variety of ways. It could be an extra long shower or taking a minute to listen to one of your favorite songs in your CD collection that you never get around to hearing. Maybe all you need to do is pick up the phone for quick talk with an old friend. I’m a fan of taking a quick walk. Really try to do just one thing for those few minutes. Resist the urge to multi-task.

Whatever you do, clear your mind and leave your problems behind. Your 5 minute trip won’t solve any major problems but resist the urge to keep working. People need moments to recharge. Our lives may be more packed than ever with non-stop challenges but by taking a moment to celebrate yourself, you’ll find yourself more refreshed for the challenges ahead.
